Why isn't the iron on vinyl sticking to my iron on shirt?
First off, the most common reason your HTV might not stick to your shirt, sweater, or whatever else you're applying it to can be because you're not applying enough pressure. And pressure is important. Without it, your HTV projects may not last as long as you would like.
If the HTV does not stick to the garment, increase the pressure of your heat press. The presence of a coating on the fabric can also be a reason why vinyl does not stick to clothing the presence of a coating on the fabric, generally water repellent or antimicrobial products.
Do not worry, you can use a household iron to apply heat transfer vinyl. Yes, using a heat press is easier and faster, but it is possible to achieve quality home ironing if you do it right! Here are some dos and don'ts for using a home iron with HTV.
- Place the iron on the pad "shiny side down". ...
- Don't forget to copy the design! ...
- Select the correct cutting settings so that you do not cut the carrier sheet. ...
- Press to the appropriate temperature. ...
- Use a dry iron. ...
- Hold the iron still.
The ideal temperature for vinyl heat transfer is in between260 ℉ do 315 ℉(130℃ to 160℃) using moderate pressure.
HTV must be heldbetween 100 and 305 degrees Fahrenheit. Pressing time may vary depending on HTV thickness, design size and color.
Be sure to use a firm, flat surface. Ironing boards and plastic surfaces have some drawbacks that do not provide the firm, flat surface needed for successful results. Heat the material again for an additional 10-15 seconds.
PRODUCT | TEMPERATURE | YEAR |
---|---|---|
Stripflock Pro | 311 F | 10-15 seconds, press again for 10 seconds if the design rises |
Siser Easyweed Glow in the dark | 305 F | Pre-press for 2 seconds, then 10-15 seconds |
WAAKut Express | 250-302 F | 5 seconds |
Siser Sparkle | 311 F | 15 seconds |
10-15 secondsit's perfect pressure time. You don't want to burn the glue by holding the heat too long and applying too much pressure.
Apply moderate pressure with a flat iron25-30 seconds. Turn the material over and apply moderate pressure to the back of the material with the iron for an additional 25-30 seconds.
How long do I iron a day?
For Everyday Iron On, the settings are 315° for30 seconds. Before placing the sticker on the body, pre-press with EasyPress for about 5 seconds.
Preparation for ironing (HTV)
For blanks like t-shirts, sweatpants, jeans, or anything else you're likely to wash in the washing machine in the future,we recommend pre-washing the cover without fabric softener to shrink the garment and remove chemicals that can prevent a strong fit.

Using the wrong temperature
If the temperature you use is too low, the vinyl will not stick. You will need to reheat it at a higher temperature. If the temperature of your iron is too high, your HTV design will melt and shrink. It will stick, but it will also change the texture of the fabric.
Vinyl plates have a melting point of approx200 degrees Fahrenheit— but if they're left in a hot car for too long, they'll start to warp and lose their shape, which could even render them useless.
You don't want to risk removing the heat transfer vinyl while it's still hot.Allow time for the glue to cool and adhere to the fabric.
You can press the HTV again with much more pressure than the first time.
At what temperature do you press HTV on polyester? The recommended heat press temperature for HTV on polyester should not exceed 270 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not use high temperatures on polyester as this may cause burn marks or discoloration.
Onlyplace the vinyl iron on your machine (sold separately), cut out the desired design, peel off the backing, stick it to the garment and iron!
Install HTVGlossy side down and matte side up
So the duller, stickier side of the material is the side to be cut. When applying heat, the carrier side will face up. This is why you should always map your image and text onto your designs before cutting.
Time, temperature and pressure are extremely important factors when applying HTV, so make sure all of these factors are correct for each vinyl you use. Time – If the press time is too long or too shortthis will cause the HTV to come off your clothes.
Why is the vinyl coming off my shirt?
Insufficient pressurethis is one of the biggest reasons why HTV peels shirts. Using a pressure pad when embossing HTV onto t-shirts in a heat press helps with more even and consistent pressure for better results.
Iron or heat pressused to adhere heat transfer vinyl to fabric surfaces.
Siser EasyWeedit's long-lasting and won't wrinkle, rip or peel your clothes. It is durable enough to withstand clothes that you just throw in the regular wash. It can even be tumble dried on normal settings.
Place a release sheet over the shirt. Close the heat press on the shirt. Use moderate pressure. Adjust the temperature to 340-345°
Leave forAt least 24 hoursAfter pressing HTV
This will cause the HTV to shift, stretch or otherwise move into the base garment and ruin your work. Instead, leave it on for at least 24 hours after ironing before washing the garment.
When working with heat transfer vinyl, the shiny side of the material always goes face downfor cutting. This shiny side is called the "bracket". It covers the face (the painted side that will be facing out) of the HTV and keeps the cut pieces flush during cutting and application.
10-15 secondsit's perfect pressure time. You don't want to burn the glue by holding the heat too long and applying too much pressure.
Be sure to use a firm, flat surface. Ironing boards and plastic surfaces have some drawbacks that do not provide the firm, flat surface needed for successful results. Heat the material again for an additional 10-15 seconds.
You run the risk of "boiling" the vinyl if you press more than once in the same period of time. If it doesn't stick after the suggested time, just wait another 2-3 seconds, not all the way through again (if you're using an Easy Press or an iron, be sure to press even harder during that extra time).
Apply moderate pressure with a flat iron25-30 seconds. Turn the material over and apply moderate pressure to the back of the material with the iron for an additional 25-30 seconds.
Is there a difference between heat transfer vinyl and iron on vinyl?
Both types of vinyl require heat and pressure to transfer the image to the fabric. However, there are some significant differences between the two.Iron-on is a special paper that is lighter than HTV and can be applied in one layer. HTV is most effective with large designs and the use of a heat press is recommended.
And! You absolutely can. Smooth (sometimes called normal or basic) htv can be laid up to four layers.
In addition, pre-washing is not always necessary. If you prefer to wash your clothes, be sure to avoid liquid fabric softeners that leave HTV repellent residue.
